When The Sea Came In

When The Sea Came In - Remembering The Great Flood of 1953

An afternoon of talks jointly hosted by the University of Suffolk and Suffolk Archives commemorating 70 years since the deadly floods of 1953.

This event will focus on the impact the floods of 1953 had upon Suffolk. Featuring contributions from historians and flood emergency professionals it will revisit the ‘Great Tide’ 70 years on to highlight lesser-known aspects of its consequences for the county. What made the floods of 1953 so deadly? What were the implications for Suffolk’s coastal landscape and agricultural economy? What was the emergency response in 1953 and how effective was it? Is such an event likely to occur again? How well prepared is Suffolk to face a similar challenge?

Venue: The Hold, Ipswich. Full details available here.
